Horses of all ages are susceptible to Strangles, caused by Steptococcus equi infection. However, the disease is most common in horses less than 5 years of age. Strangles is transmitted by direct contact with infected horses and by indirect contact with contaminated objects such as water buckets and fences. Infection can result in significant swelling and rupture of the lymph nodes which produce a thick pus. Due to complications, severe infections can be fatal.
