Traumatic synovitis can occur after repeated episodes of trauma such as every day use, training, or performance.

In horses, synovitis is very common in high-motion joints such as the carpus and fetlock, and it is a major cause of early retirement for equine athletes. Over time, repetitive trauma can damage the joint capsule, synovial lining, cartilage and even the subchondral bone, leading to equine osteoarthritis.

Legend® is an injectable solution approved by the FDA for the treatment of joint dysfunction of the carpus or fetlock in horses due to non-infectious synovitis associated with equine osteoarthritis. It contains the active ingredient hyaluronic acid (HA) in the form of sodium hyaluronate. This hyaluronic acid originates from a microbial source, so there is no potential for contamination with dermatan or chondroitin sulfate, or any other glycosaminoglycan. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in the joint synovial fluid; it is responsible for supporting the viscosity of synovial fluid and promotes proper joint lubrication. Studies have shown that injection of hyaluronic acid directly into the joint capsule promotes healing of the inflamed synovium by restoring proper lubrication.

Legend® helps reduce joint inflammation in horses and the associated pain and lameness. Treatment may be repeated weekly for a total of 3 treatments. Safety regarding the use of Legend® in breeding stallions or in breeding, pregnant, or lactating mares has not been determined.

Supplied as a 4 ml or 20 ml bottle of sterile, ready to use solution. Legend® 4 ml and Legend® 20 ml are approved only for I.V. use. Needles and syringes sold separately.
